May 20, 2011, we graduated another tremendous class of seniors – 100% graduated and character wise, they are one of our finest classes ever. Academically, they are extremely bright as well as good citizens who are dedicated community servants. We take great pride in our student body and look forward to their accomplishments once they leave Gordon Lee.
One of our annual traditions at the end of the school year is the moving up of classes, which is something students greatly anticipate. As we begin another school year, it is time for a new group of Seniors to lead, a new group of Middle School students to become Freshmen, and a new group of 5th graders to step up to the Middle School. The time truly does pass quickly and we want to maximize class time to ensure our students receive the very best education, something they need and deserve!
Recently the State Department of Education released test scores for the Criterion Reference Competency Test and the Georgia High School Graduation Test–we are extremenly proud of our student’s performance, and I must also praise our tremendous faculty. I am also pleased to tell you that even in the worst of times our staff is working harder than ever. Chickamauga City School System has received State cuts of $998,727.00 for the 2011-2012 school year and additional cuts could occur during the year. All staff members are being furloughed six days during the 2011-2012 school year. The number of furlough days could also increase during the school year. This is the third consecutive year we have been furloughed six days. The proof of the hard work of our faculty is reflected in the students academic performance – this is the greatest gain of students moving from the “meets” level to the “exceeds level” in over a decade. Our high school students also did a tremendous job, outscoring the State averages.
Education is a necessity, but we want it to be memorable as well. We want our students prepared for the next step in their lives, and capable of success no matter what their goals may be. We want to graduate young people who are well educated but also well rounded; students who take pride in their family, school, and community; students with empathy for others and a giving spirit. The future truly is in our young people and we feel Gordon Lee High School is definitely graduating the leaders of tomorrow.
We invite you to visit our schools, website, and any extra-curricular activities. We want the very best for our students in academics, technology, and facilities. Currently, we are in the process of expanding our curriculum to include Health Occupation and are also adding turf to our football field. We continuously work to improve in every aspect of our system and appreciate the support offered by the community.
Sincerely,
Melody Day
